As convenient as it would be for horses to be programmed machines with changeable parts that are ready to go at a moments notice, they are not. Just like us, they need to develop body awareness, strength, and stamina to safely and comfortably do their job. That is true for the backyard trail horse and the 5 star eventer. Sometimes in our attempts to protect them we control too much of their movement and apply too much padding and support, leading to poor body awareness and weak bodies that predispose them to injury. Training proper use of their muscles and joints starts when they are young, but it is never too late to restart the process.
